Australian coach Commens hopes to get an invitation for 2012 Champions Trophy
The Australian team failed to book a podium finish and ended up fifth in the 2011 Rabo Champions Trophy for women that concluded yesterday, on July 3, in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Australia was knocked out from making it into the 2012 Champions Trophy.
This exclusion took place when they lost the fifth-sixth position match against England by 2-0.
Over this disappointing performance of the Hockeyroos, the team’s coach, Adam Commens, shared the fact that the Champions Trophy result reflects the present standing of the team and also the grounds in which the team lacked.
Commens stated, “I thought we dominated the second half. It was a game of two halves where they controlled the first half and we turned it around in the second half. Once again we had more circle penetrations, more shots on goal and more penalty corners
but again we were unable to score which has been a common theme.”
According to him, the weaker areas of the team will be addressed well for improvement until the 2012 London Olympics.
Besides the team’s weaknesses, Commens also pointed out that the team displayed the potential to make many goals that can be further improved.
He expects that the team still has a chance to be called for the next Champions Trophy in Argentina as two teams have to be selected by the International Hockey Federation’s (FIH) board on the basis of business benefit to the event.
He remarked, “The 2012 Champions Trophy is obviously a really important tournament and I am hoping we get an invitation as it will give us another indication of where we are at against the world’s best teams.”
On the other hand, the England’s Head coach, Danny Kerry, was very happy and happy over his team’s victory. At the end of the match, he shared that the last whole week went very well as the team managed to draw two games with two stronger sides after a loss
from Argentina by a close 1-0. Moreover, there were three consecutive wins in the previous days that reflected a very strong performance record.
