Australian cricket team were wearing the VB logo cap in a practice match against Jamaican XI on Friday night. And a few Australian stars were angered by this as they should've been wearing the baggy green.

Have a read of the article

Your thaughts..should Australia be wearing the baggy green? Are they dishonouring Australia by wearing a beer cap?

>>> i honestly think that they should be wearing the baggy green cap. Australians have made that cap a very honourable cap..it means a lot to Australian cricket..they shouldn't dis it for a VB cap.

  1. no not at all the baggy green is traditionaly worn in test matches

if they wore it during a test match then you will have a point

all teams are sponsored and the sponser will always want something for their investment

funny though advertising vb in the west indies when it is not sold there

ill give you a star for this q

greg mathews was always outspoken i take what he sais with a grain of salt

when he was playing for australia he had to do sponsorship stuff in the interests of the team

he was happy to take the benifits which the sponsors threw his way as well as his hair hat sponsorship

  2. It's just yet another example of the overly commercialised world that we live in. We see it in all sports: the participants having to wear the sponsors logos at all times to give them maximum exposure- just look at motor racing as the most hideous example of this.

You can take it two ways. From a purists point of view, the players should only wear their team colours, and completely eschew the adornment of any marketing materials. On the other hand, the sponsors put a lot of money into the game, which allows the players to have good salaries and a decent standard of living. So some form of repayment needs to be attributed: sponsors are businesses, not charities.

And this sort of thing has always gone on. Players often used to wear all manner of headgear during matches: remember Douglas Jardine's Harlequin cap?

Australia will, as always, wear the baggy green during the first session of the Test match. That tradition won't be broken.

  3. i agree fully, mattews was right in havin ago at the acb because the baggy green is our identity in test matches, the don would be PISSED. if aussie cricketers are goin to wear sponcered clothing it should only be aloud in odi or 20/20. keep the tradition of the baggy green with the test matches!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. VB is a sponsor of the Australian team, you have to carry out your obligations to your sponsor. They don't practice/train in their baggy greens, they are only for test cricket. I think whoever bothered to criticize them for this must be either a trouble stirrer or not have enough to do!

  5. I can understand your views on this,i as an Aussie would have been pretty pi**ed off if they had have been wearing it during an actual Test match, but considering it was only an exhibition match and VB are the sponsors NO i don't see a problem in wearing it for an exhibition match..

But you do bring up a very good point on respecting The Baggy Green......

EDIT: Greg Matthews has always had a very big mouth,as you say it may sound like we dont care about our Baggy green but that is not true it means so much to our players, they would never do anything to dis-respect that cap....Matthews should learn to keep his big mouth shut,it is people like him who bring un-wanted media attention to the Australian Cricket Team....

    **Star.....

  6. The series in West Indies is called VB series and is sponsored by VB.  The wearing of cap will be as per the agreement with the sponsors, though I strongly feel that any agreement should not be detrimental to national interest.

  7. I notice Greg Matthews had a lot to say. This comes under the heading, 'what a hide!". Matthews was a big flouter of rules in his day & just comes across as an idiot here. They DON'T  wear the Baggy Green at practice games, why would they? And Matthews damned well knows it. He should pull his head in.

  8. AGAIN i agree with Ange! (this is starting to get a little disturbing) Greg Matthews always had more mouth than results! he should learn to keep his mouth shut sometimes!

personally i can see the point in not wearing them in a practice match, as cricket is now a business and you do have to keep the sponsors happy, weather you like it or not, theyre giving you money and you got keep them happy or they stop giving you money!

Also for someone like Haddin, Noffke or Casson (yes i know they didnt play but they help to make my point), i dont think they should be wearing the australian baggy green test cap, purely because they havent earnt a baggy green yet as they havent played test cricket yet, the cap is sacred as far as i am concerned, if you haved played test cricket you shouldnt wear the baggy green in a practice match until you have played test cricket, then if you want to wear it in any practice match then go for it, i would! but do not wear a test cap before you have played test cricket

  9. If they are in white they should be wearing the 'green'. There is plenty of room on the shirt for a VB logo.

The VB cap is fine in the other pyjama forms of the game.

The players are representing Australia  not VB

  10. Matthews has always been a tool. Why now is he making a big thing of this unimportant matter? He had no time for the laws and rules when he played, so why is he trying to beat this up into something big. The cricketers have never worn the baggy green for anything but tests.
