  1. He definitely isn't a pure bred Kelpie.

This is my pedigreed Kelpie, Comet

and I can see the similarities in their heads.  However the colour is all wrong.  Kelpies are either solid coloured (black, brown, fawn, red, etc) or are red and tan or black and tan.  Therefore the white shows that another breed is present.  It is hard to imagine Border Collie cos the coat appears to be very short.

Whatever the mix is I can say that Kelpies are a fantastic, intelligent dog with loads of energy.  They are probably best not kept in a small back yard or solely as an inside dog.  They need space to run (we have 5 acres).  They also have a high prey drive which leads them to chase cars.  They are a brilliant dog to do Obedience and Agility with.  One thing I have noticed is that my dog listens to the Instructor and follows prompts from the dogs being trained around him.  Thats's because he is always watching out for what is happening around him.  I guess it's the working thing cos when working sheep they have to be able to both follow instructions but also think for themselves if a sheep breaks.  A terrific breed.

Edit:  The black and tan colours are consistent with a Kelpie.  See the following link:

  2. Yeah i think you are right, either that or a full blooded kelpie

  3. i doubt that he was mixed with and type of collie or shetland sheepdog because of how short his hair is. his markings and size kind of define the fact that he isnt a full australian kelpie. he was probably mixed with some type of shepherd, most likely german shepherd.

  4. He looks like a Australian Kelpie with a german shepherd/husky.

    :)

    CUTE ! :D

  5. I think I'd toss Bernese Mountain Dog or Swiss Mountain Dog in the mix.  The prick ears come from the Kelpie, but the coloring (especially the blaze - a dominant gene) would sway me toward one of these two.

  6. Odd markings for a Kelpie.  Looks very mixed, perhaps some Husky or shephered in there (ears!) and the markings speak rott or dobe to me.
