Australian players on the rise – Tennis News
Australian tennis stars raise multiple ranks after impressive performances during the year’s first Grand Slam tournament, the Australian Open. First player to make it to his career-high rankings in the Aussie teenager, Bernard
Tomic, who is listed as world number 34 in the latest issued rankings by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) on Monday. Matthew Ebden also played well and raised nine ranks to world number 85, whilst the former world number one, Lleyton Hewitt shoot
50 spots to world number 131.
Tomic started the Australian Open campaign with a major upset, defeating the 22nd ranked Spaniard, Fernando Verdasco, in a gruelling five-setter encounter. He knocked-out the American, Sam Querrey, in the second round
before capsizing the 13th ranked Ukrainian, Alexandr Dolgopolov, in a punishing five-setter marathon. In the fourth round of the Australian Open tournament he went face-to-face with the Swiss Maestro, Roger Federer. He put up an exciting fight before
losing in straight sets 6-4, 6-2, 6-2. His outstanding performances earn him some crucial points to rise his ranking considerably.
Ebden was entirely a different player during the Australian Open tournament. He outplayed the Brazilian contestant, Joao Souza, in the first round of the tournament before losing after a two set lead from the 24th ranked
Japanese, Kei Nishikori. It was obviously a world class performance from the Aussie that definitely caught an eye of the Australian Tennis Federation. He will soon be announced as the member of Australia’s Davis Cup team that will feature against the Chinese
team in February. It is definitely high time for 24-years-old, Ebden, to step up and make his country proud.
Thirdly, it was the former world number one, Lleyton Hewitt, who rose to world number 131, after a fruitful Grand Slam tournament. Hewitt was impressive performer at Melbourne; starting his campaign successfully against Cedrik-Marcel
Stebe of Germany. He was lucky against the former world number one, Andy Roddick, who retired from the match in the second round but the classic performance of the Aussie superstar came in the third round against the 23rd ranked Canadian, Milos Raonic, who
was outdone in four sets. Hewitt lost to the reigning Australian Open champion, Novak Djokovic, in the fourth round but the overall performance by the 30-years-old Aussie was absolutely fascinating especially for the home fans.
All these Aussie players will be fired up to perform at the Davis Cup tie against China in February especially the blistering 19-years-old, Bernard Tomic.
