  1. Well, the Australian Government places most refugees in detention centres such as Christmas Island.

When a boat of refugees, or an individual is detained for breaching the bounds of the border of Australia, they are taken to Christmas Island where they are kept for a period of time (generally a month or more) and the Government processes the given information and then makes a decision as to whether permanent status will be granted (depends on where the person has come from, ie Fiji or a war-torn country).

The Government has just announced that those people who come to Australia on a visa, and stay beyond the time it expires, they will not be detained or arrested, but dealt with by the Government or a Court of Law. (This is yet to be finalised)

  2. Well, as the Federal government has just turned policies upside-down, and announced that detention centres are to be closed, with refugees and detainees released into the community, whatever you write is going to be obsolete.

  3. That's a hot topic at the moment. Kevin Rudd just ordered the closing of a lot of the immigration centres (minus Christmas Island).

Try googling it. Just put in the words asylum, Australia, refugee etc
