I live in the US, and family are thinking about possibly moving to Australia in the future

From what i've heard, MOST schools have uniforms.

Do most kids wear there uniforms outside of school or do they change and dress in casual clothes while hanging out, shopping, etc?

This is what we wear out typically- http://i27.tinypic.com/zvvhuv.jpg

Is that anything like australian style at all? What is the fashion like there? compare/contrast?

not looking for rude answers that criticize americans either..

any more info about teen life in australia would help, thanks :)

  1. Yesss that is exactly the same sort of thing me and my friends would wear. Preety much all of our fashion comes from overseas so you might even find your a season ahead. Also pretty much all schools have uniforms and no one, well at least that i no would wear there school uniforms just for hanging out, unless you'd just come from school.

  2. Your photo looks like any group Aussie girls ,although sometimes we are just a bit more casual than that especially in summer when it's more like cossies under a nice top and shorts and Thongs(flip flops) and boardies (for boys).School uniforms are worn at school and most kids will go straight to the shops in them although there are strict rules on this if you attend a private school ,though my kids generally can't wait to get out of their uniform. The best thing about uniforms is not deciding every morning what to wear and less competition at school about the clothes you wear. From a mothers point of view it saves heaps of money too.

  3. apparently melbourne is the fashion capital or australia (i love in melbourne) and yeah we sometimes wear things like that, if you even walk through melbourne- the city you will see what kind of fashions we have. we tend to go alot more casual though, it depends who you want to hang around with (typical, yes -.-).

i go to a private school and they are really strict on school uniforms but i know of 3 schools so far that have free dress. its rare though, no idea why.

  4. That pic you have there looks exactly like any Aussie teen here!

Most schools have SOME sort of school uniform here, whether it just be a school t-shirt (most public schools) or a complete uniform set (typically private schools).

If your going shopping or hanging out straight after school, just wear your uniform! Unless you have a reason to, i don't think many people change clothes.

I don't think you'll have any problem with fashion, or fitting in. Just be relaxed and don't try too hard and everyone will love you! =)

  5. same style clothes over here....you will love it here, we have some goods fashion designers here you knw...its not that much different to your country just different way of doing things

  6. Yeah, Australian teens wear similar things to the USA kids.

I would say the kids in both countries are very similar!

There is a strong emo culture amongst us Aussie teens. I personally cannot stand the fact of goth like kids, committing suicide!

Don't worry, all kids are bascially the same!

    Thanks for the question :)

  7. Jennifer is right, that group of girls in the photo could easily  be mistaken for a typical group of Australian girls hanging out  at the  mall before school or on the weekend.   To give you an idea of what teenage girls  wear here in Aus I have included a couple of links to store websites  were teens are likely to shop if they live in a  medium sized to large town. Hope it helps. Bear in mind too that we don't have as much choice and variety  here in Australia compared to what you'd find in  the US, we just don't have as  big a population  as the US. You will probably get lots of people asking you were you got your clothes from :)
