Australian swimmers outperform at the 2012 EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships - Part 4
The fourth day of the 2012 EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships concluded with the addition of Stephanie Rice, Nick D’Arcy and Bronte Barratt in the Australian team to the 2012 London Olympic Games.
The session concluded with the 200m Individual Medley (IM), 100m freestyle, 200m butterfly, 200m freestyle and 200m breaststroke in Men’s and Women’s corner.
The initial event of the session was Women’s 200m IM final, where the three-time Olympic champion, Rice reserved her spot in the national team to London by seizing gold medal of the event with the timing of 2 minutes and 09.38 seconds.
Her gold winning effort remained almost two strokes ahead of Alicia Coutts, who also secured her place to London by earning silver medal of the discipline by clocking 2 minutes and 09.83 seconds. The second position holder was followed by Emily Seebohm,
who remained almost one and a half body length behind and touched the finishing wall with the timing of 2 minutes and 12.37 seconds for bronze medal.
Subsequently, the current world champion, James Magnussen spoiled the party of his challengers by finishing first in the Men’s 100m freestyle semi-final as he completed his race in a time of 47.93 seconds.
He was trailed by Matt Targett of Melbourne, who concluded his swim in second place by posting 48.56 seconds while James Roberts reached the finishing end as third best swimmer by clocking 48.60 seconds.
The third event of the session was Men’s 200m butterfly semi-final, where Nick D’Arcy made his way into the Australian team to London by clinching gold medal of the event with the timing of 1 minute and 54.71 seconds.
He was followed by Christopher Wright, who also secured his spot to London Games by producing a time of 1 minute and 56.40 seconds. He was chased by Grant Irvine, who finished third in the discipline and settled on the wall with the timing of 1 minute and
56.67 seconds.
After a while, Bronte Barratt seized gold medal of the Women’s 200m freestyle by submitting a time of 1 minute and 55.99 seconds. Her impressive effort stayed just an inch ahead of Kylie Palmer, who clocked an effort of 1 minute and 56.04 seconds for second
position. The third finest spot of the race was obtained by Melanie Schlanger, who settled on the finishing end as third position holder by reporting a time of 1 minute and 56.73 seconds.
Next was the semi-final of Women’s 200m butterfly, where Jessicah Schipper ended first and qualified into the final by posting a time of 2 minutes and 09.94 seconds. She was followed by Samantha Hamill, who secured second best qualification spot by clocking
2 minutes and 10.14 seconds whereas Amy Smith finished third with an effort of 2 minutes and 10.90 seconds.
The last event of the session was Men’s 200m breaststroke semi-final, where Brenton Rickard finished first with the timing of 2 minutes and 10.99 seconds.
He was trailed by Craig Calder, who remained almost one body length away and submitted a time of 2 minutes and 13.69 seconds. Calder was traced by Jeremy Meyer, who acquired third qualifying position with the timing of 2 minutes and 14.22 seconds.
The session completed after the conclusion of all events while Rice, D’Arcy and Barratt expressed that they will try to achieve the same at London Olympics.
