  1. No it doesn't work like that.

You can only claim the tax free amount on one of the jobs, usually the 1st and you pay tax on the rest iof your earnings at the marginal rate and put a tax return  in at the end of the year to claim back any over payment.

  2. it's a bit hard to explain without knowing all your details but you shouldn't get charged double tax (although if you are earning more income, you should expect to pay more tax).  Have a look at hte PAYG calculator on the ATO website.  Eg. if you plug in a weekly income of $500 and don't claim the threshold, your net pay should be around $383.  if you change the setting on the calculator to claim the threshold, your net pay should be $446.

Have a go with the calculator with your current & 2nd job pay details

  3. If you pay the top marginal rate of tax on your second job's wages, and your taxable income for the year is in a lower tax bracket subject to a lower rate of tax, then when you do your tax refund you should get a tax refund of a lot of that tax. Otherwise, you could lodge a PAYG Withholding Variation for the second job so that they can withhold tax at a lower rate, depending on your estimated level of total income from all sources in the 2009 tax year. Edit-

lol - I think there might be a loser trailing my questions giving me thumbs down. Just for the heck of it. I wonder if they get a "thumbs up" down below each time they do it, hehe
