Australian team should be a blend of veterans and youngsters, says http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Gregory-Stephen-Chappell-c60820 – Cricket News Update
Former Australian skipper, Greg Chappell, is not in favour of brining too many young lads into the national setup, and said that the side should host a mixture of new and experienced players.
Due to Australia’s not-so-impressive performance over the last couple of years, the senior players such as http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MG-Johnson-c1945 are under heavy criticism and their place in the team is at stake.
The former captain has no doubt that http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 have a huge bunch of talented cricketers in the junior ranks, but believes that sacrificing veterans just for the sake of including new faces is not a good idea by any means.
Referring to Ponting’s case, Chappell opined that the ex-skipper’s experience is surely an asset for the side, and Ponting should be allowed to play as long as he contributes something good with the bat.
"That knowledge and experience is a very handy asset to have in the group. You don't want to bring all young players in together. I don't think that's a recipe for success, any more than you want to have a team that's all old players and all experienced
players," Chappell expressed his opinion at the launch of his book ‘Fierce Focus’ in Sydney.
He however, made it clear that Haddin and Ponting must not take their place in the squad for granted, adding “"a little bit of pressure is good for everyone."
Chappell recently quit his post as Cricket Australia's (CA) national talent manager following the recommendations of the Argus review. During his job, he worked a lot on hunting and polishing young talent and thus, on the basis of his knowledge, Chappell
believes that Australian cricket has a bright future ahead.
He remained tight-lipped when asked to mention the names of a few individuals, but insisted that there are certainly many good players coming up from the domestic level.
"I'm excited about the prospects for Australian cricket. We do have some really good young cricketers around the place," uttered Australia’s all time great cricketer who served his country in 87 Tests and 74 One Day Internationals (ODIs).
