  1. Lee Enfeilds and whatever else GB may have issued during the war.

  2. The Lee-Enfield  was the rifle the australians used

  3. They were Lee Enfield Mk III's using the .303 British round.

PS. It was sacrifice, not scarface lol.

  4. The most common rifle used by Austrailian troops in WWII was the caliber 303, No3MkIII Short Magazine Lee Enfield (SMLE).  Austrilia had a arsenal at Lithgow were most were produced.

Oh since you are in OZ   "Up there Cazaly"

  5. The Oz troops would be carrying SMLE rifles No. 1 Mk. III made in the Lithgow armory in NSW.

They would also have had squad BREN guns as a light machine gun. Both fired the venerable .303 Brit caliber.

At Kakoda in 1942, they would not have had the No. 4 Mk 1 Enfields yet. These were only adopted in 1939 and only made in England the first couple years and the English were in no position to be supplying guns to Oz at the time.

You can easily tell a SMLE No.1 Mk III from the later improved No. 4s by the position of the rear sight. The SMLE had the rear sight on the barrel far in front of the bolt and the No. 4 had it at the rear on top of the receiver.

By the way, the later No. 4s were never designiated using the S.M.L.E. name (Short-rifle, Magazine-fed, Lee-Enfield design), although this is a common mistake you hear many collectors and websites use. A No. 1 Mk III is a SMLE, a No. 4 Mk. 1 is not an SMLE.

  6. The common military rifles of the empire were the No1 MkIII and by that time in WWII the No4 Mk1

The general consensus of the research I have done on the battle was that these guns were used by the Aussies

    Lee-Enfield No.4 Mk I

    Enfiled SMLE No 1 MkIII

    Owen Gun

    Thompson Submachine Gun

    Bren Light Machine Gun

    Lewis Light Machine Gun

    Vickers Medium Machine Gun

These were also generally the standard weapons of a small defensive force at the time
