Australia’s Angus Galloway, Alexander Gough regain lead on Day 5 of 420 European Junior Championship
Australian 420 Junior sailing team comprising of Angus Galloway and Alexander Gough has taken the overall lead again and are just one point ahead of second-placed Guillaume Pirouelle and
Valentin Sipan. The Australian team is now leading the standings with 18 points overall at the end of Day 5 of 420 European Junior Championship at Nieuwpoort in Belgium.
Galloway and Gough sailed left on the North Sea off Nieuwpoort to win the only race of Day 5 and pounce upon the first place again. The Aussies have been shifting between top two places
throughout the tournament, winning four fleet races of Gold fleet. Now they have grabbed the first place again just one day before the championship ends.
The Australian pair sailed under ideal weather conditions on Day 5 and finished the race with first place after third attempt. They punched upwind before tacking onto the port, as they
sailed off starboard tack. However, the pair continued extending their lead , as they reached first windward mark during the race on Day 5 on Nieuwpoort waters.
While speaking to the local media after the race, Gough said, “I guess we kind of thought at the start we liked the left and kind of planned our race around it. And then with thirty seconds
to go there was no-one on the pin end and we pulled on and tacked when we thought would be the best time, as there was more pressure on the left.”
Galloway added, “We kind of hit the straps and we had a really good one. Once you have a really good start and cross everyone, it’s quite easy then, you have clear air and can do what
you want,' before adding: 'Although the race is not over until you cross the finish line.”
