6.
Earlier during the day, in the men’s clashes, the Black Sticks Men thrashed the Australian men’s hockey team by 3-0 to record a historic victory after almost a gap of twelve years.
However, the Kiwi women could not replicate their boys’ performance and ended up losing against Australia’s Hockeyroos.
The match was quite exciting with Black Sticks women struggling to outperform their rivals. They displayed wonderful efforts but were unable to match the class of the Australian Hockeyroos.
Australia’s team played an aggressive game from the starting whistle until the end of the fixture. It scored a dual strike in the first half whereas its opponents managed to score only a single goal.
Although Black Stick Women took an early lead, they could not capitalise on the opportunities, resulting in the Australians bouncing back pretty well to take hold of their well deserved victory.
Black Sticks Women opened their account just four minutes into the play in the first half when Katie Glynn ticked the score board for the first time in the match, giving her team an early head start.
However, in the middle stages of the first half Hockeyroos started to exert more pressure on the Kiwi’s defence line that eventually worked for them.
The Hockeyroos made the score even just ten minutes before the end of the first half when they successfully converted a penalty stroke.
The Australians managed to score the deciding goal of the match on another penalty corner in the ending moments of the first half.
The first half ended at 2-1 in favour of Australia. Despite relentless efforts, the second half remained scoreless for both, Australia’s Hockeyroos and New Zealand’s Black Stick Women.
The next game is scheduled to be played on Saturday October 8.
