Australia’s Neil Robertson trounces veteran Stephen Hendry in Round 1 of 2012 World Open
Former World Snooker Champion, Australia’s Neil Robertson avenged his defeat in the 2012 Welsh Open against the former seven-time World Snooker Champion, Scotland’s Stephen Hendry.
The Aussie had to come up strongly to oust the veteran potter by the score line of 5-3 in the first round of the 2012 World Open at the Haikou Stadium in Hainan Island. The Thunder from Down Under dominated the game from the start with a superb 4-1 lead.
His run disturbed by the Scotsman in the second session but he instantly regained control of the game to lead it to the end with 5-3 score line.
The first session was all Robertson show as the Australian breezed into a 3-1 lead to totally unsettle his opponent. Hendry seemed to have lost his heart quite early when Robertson moved within 4-1 lead. However, the Golden Boy made his way back into the
contest with back-to-back frame victories after pocketing a couple of impressive knocks of 63 and 69 points to take the scores at 4-3.
Hendry’s comeback did trouble the Aussie when he grabbed lead in the eighth frame and the scores seemed to have levelled but he missed a crucial ball to allow Robertson at the baize. The Melbourne Machine cleared the table in no time and earned his first
match win in the 2012 World Open.
After his match, Robertson said to the World Snooker, “Last week in the Welsh he played very well to beat me so I knew it was going to be a tough match. I went 4-1 in front, although I won two frames on the black and that was the difference in the match.
It could have gone 4-4 so I'm very relieved to get through.”
The 30-year-old added, “The main thing was coming here and not losing in the first round. Hopefully I can improve and go on from here.”
Hendry, on the other hand, said that he had lost the match in first session when his opponent was leading 3-1 and then 4-1. He added that it is hard to come back into the game from three frames down; however, his objective is still to win every match. He
has had a very successful career and he just wants to enjoy his snooker as he has nothing to prove.
