International cricket’s apex governing body, the International Cricket Council (ICC), on Monday hailed Australia’s recent retiree http://www.senore.com/Cricket/RT-Ponting-c2377 as "one of the true legends of the sport".
The 37-year-old Ponting’s 17-year-long illustrious Test career came to an end shortly before lunch on the fourth day of the third and final Test against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757, at the WACA Ground in Perth on Monday, after he made eight runs in his second innings, as Australia suffered a 309-run defeat.
Since making his international debut in February 1995, Ponting went on to play 168 Tests and 375 One Day Internationals, and won the ICC World Cup three time, twice as skipper (2003, 2007).
Despite having endured an extended lean patch over the last two years, Ponting retires as the second highest run scorer, behind India's http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Stephen-Rodger-Waugh-c91216’s record of most Tests played by an Australian.
With a win-loss ratio of 62.34% to 20.78%, the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Tasmania-c854 born Aussie cricketer is the most successful Test captain in the history of the game, second only to compatriot Steve Waugh (71.93% to 15.79%). The veteran middle order batsman led Australia in 77 Test matches, winning 48 while losing just 16.
Following his retirement from International cricket on Monday, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625’s Chief Executive David Richardson said that the Aussie veteran would be remembered as one of the true legends of the sport.
"His contribution to the international game has been immense and quite rightly he will be remembered as one of the true legends of the sport," David Richardson said in a statement.
"http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ricardo-Gouveia-c84824 was a team man but along the way collected many personal accolades and is the only player to have won the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for Cricketer of the Year at the LG ICC Awards for two years in succession (2006 and 2007)," he added further.
The ICC chief also wished the retiring Tasmanian star best of luck for his future endeavours.
"We wish him well in the next stage of his career and look forward to his ongoing involvement in the game beyond the boundary," concluded Richardson.
