Australia’s Tom Burton keeps leading spot of Laser fleet: 2012 Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta
After putting up a tremendous sailing show on the Portland Harbour waters, Australia’s Tom Burton was able to hit the leading spot of the Laser fleet at the conclusion of the first day of 2012 Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta. The Aussie sailor continued his
convincing run and retained his top spot with 10 points at the conclusion of six races.
Burton’s start of the 2012 Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta was convincing as he clinched a third position in the first race. However, the next two races made a little difference since he hit a second place and a bullet to claim the leading podium place of
the fleet standings.
The second day proceedings went the same way for him and with another third and first finish, he extended his lead. The winds were quite ideal for a perfect sail and the fleet had no trouble completing the scheduled race.
Burton was sailing with ease because he was already leading the result board. The sixth race did not proceed according to his hopes as he finished on ninth place but this race was discarded from the final points and his position was not challenged.
His compatriot and former Laser champion Tom Slingsby is struggling on the fourth rank with 19 points. He had a good start but in the later race failed to improvise and missed his form. Despite his fall, Slingsby can become a threat to Burton’s lead in the
upcoming races.
