Australia’s Tom Slingsby win gold medal in Laser fleet at 2011 Perth ISAF Sailing World Championship
Local hero, Tom Slingsby, dominated the Laser class from the start to finally claim the gold medal of the category with 37 points at the conclusion of the 2011 Perth International Sailing Federation (ISAF) Sailing World Championship in Australia. The ORACLE
Racing sailor compiled six bullets, including the medal race win, during his championship run to lift the title.
The Australian sailor grabbed the fleet lead from the beginning with impressive scores. His lowest score throughout his campaign was a 13th podium finish in the penultimate race, which became a discard. He proved his tremendous abilities in the
medal race too and clinched it quite comfortably to grab a 19-point lead over the second placed, Nick Thompson of Great Britain.
With this victory, the Aussie not only polished his career but also played his part to make his country qualify for the upcoming 2012 London Olympic Games. Besides, the gold medallist was also selected as the TAG Heuer Male Sailor of the Week. TAG Heuer
is ORACLE Racing’s official eyewear and watch partner.
Slingsby’s Laser fleet gold medal win has also made him the second sailor, after the legendary Robert Scheidt of Brazil, to have won four Laser Worlds titles in five years. However, Scheidt still holds the record of winning eight Laser Worlds titles in his
career.
Great Britain’s Thompson finished on second overall spot with 56 points and claimed silver medal followed by New Zealand’s Andrew Murdoch on third podium finish. Murdoch won bronze medal after scoring 59 points at the end of the 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championship.
