Austria beats Uruguay and Angola in Round-1 of Pool B – Volleyball News
Austria men’s beach volleyball tandems performed brilliantly well on the opening day of 2012 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Cup, which took centre stage in Moscow, Russia on Thursday, June 28.
Austrian duos came into contest with two pairs each from Uruguay and Angola. According to the set rules of the competition, they played four matches and finished with impeccable 4-0 record.
Doppler-Horst and Huber-Seidl represented Austria, while Williman-Zanotta and Cairus-Santiago played under the tag of Uruguay. Likewise, SEQUEIRA-SEQUEIRA and Abreu-Silva played for Angola.
First fixture of the day brought Doppler-Horst of Austria and Uruguay’s Williman-Zanottai in a neck-to-neck fight.  Both teams had good energy and demonstrated an incredible show of beach volleyball on the Russian sand. Austrians produced convincing attacks,
while Uruguayan pair showed good effort on defence. The ball kept in the air for better time. Eventually, the heated competition closed off at 29-27 and Austrian duo went on front with 1-0 lead in the match.
The aggressive response of Uruguayans was very much expected in the following set. They hit back with power and jumped on every little opportunity to score points. They showed good digging and diving on the court, which saved them a lot of crucial points.
Spirited effort proved fruitful for Uruguay and the team managed to bring the game to an even point with second-set win at 21-15.
It was indeed a nice comeback by Williman and Zanottai, but the duo failed to stop the resilient rivals in third set. Austrian men used strong offence and devastated the Uruguay’s defence line. Doppler-Horst sent 15-11 on board in third set and settled for
2-1 victory in the match.
In the next encounter, Austria’s Huber and Seidl proved their skills on the sand. They clashed with Cairus-Santiago from Uruguay and added second win to Austria’s count.
Huber and Seidl had a great chemistry between them. They quickly traded places and perfectly complimented each other throughout the match. With the help of better and attack and defence, they clawed their ways to 2-0 (21-13, 21-11) win. Unlike the first
team of Austria that spent 58 minutes on the centre court, they earned victory in only 28 minutes.
Later in the day, the Austrian duos went against teams from Angola and repeated the same brilliant act. Austria’s Huber and Seidl took on Angola’s SEQUEIRA-SEQUEIRA ANG in the first match. However, one of the Angolan players got injured and match ended in
forfeit.
Abreu-Silva received 0-2 defeat from Doppler-Horst in the next match, which led Austria to flawless 4-0 record on day-1 of the tournament.
