Austrian International Challenge: Jesus Lorenzo thrashes Josip Uglesic in qualifying round encounter
Spain’s emerging player Jesus Lorenzo delivered an elevated performance in the Men’s Singles qualifying round as he thrashed Croatia’s Josip Uglesic in the Austrian International Challenge 2012, in Austria, on Wednesday, February 22.
The un-seeded Lorenzo proved his mettle by playing fast and attacking badminton and crushed his Croatian rival in straight games by taking just 24 minutes in the court.
Uglesic played well but not enough to dominate the pace of rallies and lost both games of the match with a decent margin.
The first set was interesting in the opening rallies when both shuttlers put up tremendous show of top class badminton and progressed equally on the score board.
Lorenzo was relying on his perfect drives and pushed his opponent in all corners of the court. However, Uglesic also matched the speed of his rival and remained close until the one-minute interval in the set.
After the break, Lorenzo started to execute powerful smashed on the side lines of court and remained successful in taking a reasonable lead.
On the other hand, the Croatian committed a few unforced errors which helped his challenger to stretch his lead.
Lorenzo remained positive in the concluding phase of opening set and did not let his opponent to level the score at this stage. He continued his elevated play and bagged the starting game with a decent margin of 21-17.
In the second game, Uglesic lifted up his level by accelerating his speed in the game. He employed a different technique this time as he did not let his opponent to execute smashes. He kept the bird low and remained close to his rival until the break.
After the one-minute break, Lorenzo accelerated his speed in all areas of the court and took the bird early to create pressure on his challenger. He remained successful in controlling the pace of rallies in the concluding phase of second game.
In the ending points, Lorenzo managed to execute his strokes in the right areas and took the second set with a narrow 21-19 score on the board.
The overall score of this Men’s Singles qualifying-round contest was 21-17 and 21-19.
