The last day of the European qualifier for the 2012 CEV Junior Volleyball European Championship – Women saw matches take place on April 15.
The tournament was held to determine the teams that would directly move on to the final round of the CEV Junior Volleyball European Championship that is scheduled to be held in August of this year with both Poland as well as Denmark playing host to the matches.
Three matches took place in the Slovakian city of Bardejov one of which saw the Austrians competing with the home team. The Slovakian side was able to capitalize on the advantage of playing in the home ground as they were able to hand out a defeat to the
Austrians and advance to the final round of the tournament.
However, the Austrian women still have a chance to make it to the final round as they have been able to deliver an impressive performance throughout the tournament.
The head coach of the Austrian side, Qing Li, shared her feelings on the performance of her team in the following manner, “Honestly I have to say that I thought we would play just for the third place. But my team showed strong will and played very good matches
in Bardejov especially against the Netherlands and Switzerland. So that’s why we really deserve to be in the top three. I’m proud of my team because we really played a solid tournament. In the last years we had played only some good matches. This time we showed
good skills in almost every set. I’m really looking forward to the next round.”
The overall tournament record of the Austrian team shows a total of three victories. These wins have been accomplished at the cost of suffering two defeats in the European qualifier round.
The Austrians lost one of their matches in the tournament recently to Slovakia while the second loss was dealt to them at the hands of the Bulgarians. The match against Bulgaria was the second match of the Austrians in the tournament and was played with
impressive skill.
