Author Study Project Help?

In my Honors English class we are doing an author study project, and i have no idea what author to pick. We have 3 months to do this project so it's fairly big. In the end we have to have a biographical sketch about the author, a comprehensive list of all their works and Specific examples of literary devices they use in their work from multiple books. The only problem is, i cant think of who to pick! I would like some one with an interesting life (maybe some alcohol/drug abuse or a mental disorder...?) They also have to have written a good amount of books that i will be able to find at a regular college/public library. The author has to be either American or British. Any help is appreciated, Thanks!

edgar allen poe had a really interesting life but i think he only wrote poems and short stories.  i guess you could research it if you want to.

I just looked it up and i think he did write some books.

Anyway as for his life his mom died from tuberculosis, he fell in love with his first cousin, but she died from tuberculosis as well, and he was also an alcoholist.  he was found dead in a park but the cause of his death is a mystery.
