Preparing for a total of 10 students with high-functioning autism to attend local middle school within 2 years time. All students currently participate in full-inclusion programs within their home schools. Any ideas of what district and parents need to secure in place before students get to middle school?? All ideas, websites, journal articles regarding successful inclusion at the middle school level appreciated. And, your personal experience is welcome!! THANKS

  1. If all your students are successful in inclusion programs now .. my tendency would be to try to make the middle school program as similar as the current program to promote transition.. or if that is not possible bring over any new elements of the program that will happen in middle school. Prepare students for switching classes and using planners or other organizational folders, notebooks for homework etc. as it seems to get much more confusing with all the changing classes etc. Practice as many new middle school skills now so the kids feel confident.. using a lock or locker, changing rooms, taking notes etc.

I recently bought this book because it was recommended by a parent, but honestly haven't read it yet.

"INclusive programming for middle school students with autism/ asperger's syndrome" by Sheila Wagner

  2. One of the best things that you can do is to contact and collaborate with the intended middle school staff.  Try to dove tail their curriculum into yours.  They'll love you for it and the parents will appreciate your working together as a unit for the benefit of the children.

  3. I would also recommend Paula Kluth's books. She has written many great books about autism and inclusion. Her website also has a lot of great, free articles about these topics. http://www.paulakluth.com/
