Hello,

We live in California. My son is autistic and I am spending money for part of his treatment like appointments, classes, books, conferences, vidoes, medical evaluations, speech evaluations and other therapies. Can I claim these expenses as tax deduction when we file our annual taxes. I am saving the reciepts for all of them.

Thanks

  1. Medical evaluations, and therapy if prescribed by a doctor, would be deductible within the normal limits for deducting medical expenses.

    Good luck.

  2. Yes, all of that can be deducted as medical expenses, if the expenses are related to your child's disability.  For example, if he attends special classes designed to address his need, those are deductible as medical expenses.  Don't forget to record mileage to all of these activities as well.

Medical expenses are deductible for taxpayers who itemize and whose medical expenses are greater than 7.5% of the adjusted gross income.
