Autistic children getting called 'retards'?

I belong to a message board called fy.com(the bad word..eff you) and it's just a message board where people chat and have fun. Well, theres this one member, named Bunnee, who has an autistic daughter and she calls her own 4 year old a r****d. Is that right or should she get flamed for it?

It's an offensive way to describe her daughter and I'm stunned that she feels OK about using the word.  My son is severely autistic with profound learning disabilities and his diagnosis description says 'severely retarded', but I would never dream of referring to him as  'r****d', it's appalling.

if u chat on a site called f u ! then im sure u can call ur daughter a r****d ! its a tad sad that a woman with a child can associate with a chat room like that in the fist place.

That is awful calling your own child or any child r****d. FYI autistic children are very smart..they are not mentally retarded.

I too have an autistic daughter who also happens to be a maths genius. Yes my daughter does have problems socialising and completing everyday mundane tasks but I would never dream of calling her retarded. Most people who have some form of disability also have talents in other things. To call anyone a r****d is just pure ignorance and to say it of your own child is just downright evil.Yes she should get flamed for it.

No she should not be calling her daughter that. At the same time, I don't think it's right to flame anybody. Kids with autism are very smart, they just have trouble with communication.

That really doesn't seem right at all.  Does she even understand what autism is?  Her poor daughter  :(

mental 'r****d'ation is in itself a disease and is often shortened to r****d. also i think that their might be some "issues" with knowledge of the 'disease' on the mothers standpoint. it is possible (through misunderstanding or confusion) that she could be the autistic daughter's sister

It's so sad to hear a mother call her child retarded, shame on her! I have an autistic son and I would never, ever call him retarded.

This is not right at all, even though sometimes people with autism can have mental retardation with it, they should never be called retarded under any circumstance.  A person with autism, whether they be a child or an adult, is probably one of the best people you could know...they don't make judgement towards people and  they are very honest people. Basically with autism a person lacks the development in the areas of social interaction and communication skills. People with autism tend to be highly intelligent, they tend to accell in math, art, music, and other areas.

Suprised people still use that word!

However I'm not sure I'd like to use a website with a swear word for a name any way!  Surely only people that think unpleasant words are acceptable or necessary use this site therefore prepare to be offended!
