Question:

Auto Insurance 3 years after violation?

My husband was convicted for a DUI for sleeping in a bar parking lot (he knew he should not drive, but did not know that if you have the keys in the ignition it did not matter). I have been told that some insurance companies do not surcharge drivers with a DUI on their record after three years. Is this true? If so, does anyone know which insurance companies these are? Does it go from the date of the DUI (ie 7/30/05 - 7/30/08) or will we have to wait until 2009? Thank you for your time.

  1. depending on your state violation can be charged any where from 35- 45 months but it depends on your state, and in most cases it's 35-45 months from the date of the violation date with an exception for new york where it is 45 months from the day that you plead guilty to charges or pay the ticket, florida is different dui's are consider minor violations and you are only charged for 18 months. you may want to try progressive you can get quotes from other competitors either by phone or internet

  2. In the US you may be best looking into Progressive or Dairyland insurance, or Viking insurance.  These are all high risk companies that tend to be a little more lacks in there underwriting.  Some companies will surcharge even out to 6 or 10 years.  You are best to search around.  Find a broker that offer many companies and they can do a lot of the work for you.  Good Luck.

  3. If the case is from US or Canada . The insurance company has to do a search every yr on the cliental which cost them $5 per search. So what I am told is that they do a random search 8 people each yr out of the 100 . to keep the cost low.

Yes it is 3 yrs on Insurance records and 2 yr on police records in Canada.
