Hey, i'm 14 years old and i would like to know about an auto mechanic...i would love to be one when i am older but i would like to know...how much does it pay if i work in someone elses garage for awhile? and then when i open my own how much money would i make? how much is the running cost for my own garage? what courses do i take in school? In school i get around 2-5 a's on report card and mostly b's and some c's...if there is another job that is really good for my level, please let me know.

  1. Glad you wanna join the industry. If you have the money or your parents will pay buy an old beat up car, truck or whatever your into and work on it. You dont have to restore it but rather use it as a learning aid. I promise you that you will learn alot and be ahead of the rest (of kids your age). Dont be afraid to ask someone for help or ask a question. As far as classes or courses to take I would look into Auto Mechanics, Auto Body, Electronics, Drafting, Science and Physics. Ya can be whatever ya want to be man just NEVER give up.

  2. There are lots of automotive trade schools around.  Lincoln Technical Institute comes to mind.  A phone call to any of these places can get you the information that you want.

    Good luck!

  3. learn to repair your own car and stay away from the buis.its not worth it.overhead is astronomical, customers dont trust a mechanic, but they trust the doctor.doctors have been working on the same model for 2000 years and are still only practicing.if they make a mistake they bury it.yet every year the manufacturers put out two or three different new models and we are supposed to be experts at repaing them even before we have ever seen them.trust me its not worth it anymore, been doing this all my life.then with each new model you need to go and buy a couple of hundred for tools to repair them.good luck.

  4. Good on you planning ahead. I think you could make a good career as a mechanic. Sorry I can't help with your figures as I'm not in the industry, but I can tell you that my father used to own his own garage for many years from a young age .. it can be hard work, and things have changed a lot since then ... people now tend to just rely on the computer to diagnose everything.

Anyhow, we did have a good life growing up and could afford many of life's luxuries at the time even as it was a small workshop with many returning customers. Honesty is the best policy in that game as most people don't trust mechanics most of the time when it comes to repairs. Gain their trust and confidence in the services you offer and you gain their business.

    Good luck!!!
