Hello I have a Ford Maverick and Is pretty banged up.. A few dents on the sides and the back of the hood is in pretty bad shape. I bought a new replacement left fender because the preveus owner recked it. He said the hood flew back when he was on the high way.. He also tryed to primer it him self but he did not do a good job at all.. So im intrestid in painting the car on my own. To have the experience of doing everything myself. I did the whole interior myself so why not try painting it my self. So if anybody has any tips or knows what i need to paint my car please help.. By the way Im wanting it to match the inside of the car. ( black w/ two red stripes) or viceversa.. thank you

  1. Much bigger project than can be explained here. But my first tip is that black paint will show every imperfection. Not recomended for first paint job.

  2. Do red with black stripes

and I'd try this, it's cheap and effective.

  3. if your going to pain your car, make sure the weather is right. make sure you primer it down and sand the primer. a old painter told me once, the trick of painting a car is to make the paint look wet all the time.

  4. Thats good you want to do it yourself, thats how you get experience.

    1. First wash the vechicle with SX1005 ( you can get this at NAPA)

    2. Next wipe down car with wax and grease remover which takes of road tar, old wax and oils like fingerprints, with DX 330 (Also Availible at napa)

    3. Remove the trim and moldings which will prevent open paint edges and fin hidden rust.

    4. Repair any rust areas, dents or dings, and sand old paint with 320-400 grit and a Maroon scratch pad.

    5. Wash it again with soap and water or SX 1005 and rinse it off really good. Let it drip dry or blow it off. Then wipe it a final time once its dry with DX 330 wax and grease remover

    6. mask off the car to keep paint off areas you dont want painted. MASKING OFF RETAINS DUST...ITS BETTER TO UNDERMASK THAN OVERMASK

    7. Wipe the car down with a tack cloth and then blow the car off.

Use good quality paint, not spray paint. These are all of the paint preps. To see how to actually paint look around on the net for some tutorial videos. Good luck
