Question:

Auto Respond?

What causes an Auto Respond status? The e-mail that I received from Yahoo states "Please know that if your email account sends 50 or more messages to the same group within 20 minutes, Yahoo! Groups will suspend your account with the status of Auto-responder." However, I do not send 50 messages a DAY. This is the second time in less than 24 hours that I have been kicked out of Yahoo! It is more convenient for me to read my messages from my e-mail box. So two parts:

1) Why do you think this happened to be so quickly?

2) What would be your advise to avoid this in the future?

  2. Your PC may be a zombie that has been captured by a spammer who uses your e-mail as a conduit to forward his spam. You PC may be one of many links that spammers use to cover their trail.  Your PC will begin to slow down as more spam is routed through it. You need to purchase a "washer" program to rid your computer if the illicit program.

  3. There have been several YA users asking this same question in the last week or so.  The auto-response status can happen for different reasons.  This answer contains answers to both of your summarized questions:

-If you use a computer at work to receive Yahoo emails, this can happen when you set your email to send an automatic reply when they are going to be on vacation or not available to receive messages. If so, when the auto reply is sent to Yahoo, it will automatically put you on Auto-responder status.  The message from Yahoo is worded the same as you describe.  If this is the case, you need to remove your work email auto reply message. After doing that, follow the instructions in the last paragraph of this answer.

-There have recently been problems with delays in emails sent to Yahoo groups.  It could be that the emails you have sent to Y! groups have been delayed long enough for them to add up to 50 or more messages, then processed by Yahoo mail servers within a 20 minute time frame.all of them to be processed and totalled more than 50 messages.

You can request that your Auto-reponder status be removed by Yahoo staff.  Use the Yahoo Help Form - here is the link:

In #8, select "Other".  Make SURE on the first line that you type in "How do I reset auto-responder status?", then describe what your problem is.  Give them some time to check into your problem because they have a lot going on right now. Usually, the Y! staff will reset that status immediately. If they reset it for you, they might or might not reply.  If they don't reply and after giving them enough time to deal with it, you can check it yourself by sending a message to the group and see if it goes through.
