  1. does it crank? if not, suspect the clutch safety switch. see if there is voltage at the small starter wire with the key in crank position and the clutch pedal floored, if so see if voltage at the large wire (batt+ cable) if so, it's a bad starter.

  2. did you jump it after the battery was installed, even thou its new battery you still need to jump it because the car was "dead" for a few hours before that so it needs that extra start. if it doesn't have that id go to advanced auto parts and see about a free alternator check . GL!

83 is an old car so expect problems

  3. With the info. giving, the only thing i would suggest is to put the gearshift back in the gear you turned the engine off in, and try starting the car. If that doesnot work put the gearshift in neutral, and leave the clutch pedel out. If that doesnot work, does the engine crank ? or crank, but will not start. You may have locked the starter up into the flywheel. Thats all i can tell you! I hope that it will help you get out, and the road.GOOD LUCK!

I just read your add. comments. IT is not the alternater, your problem is to get the engine to run. Your problem has just shifted to an ELECTRICAL one. You are now into the spark, and coil , and it sounds like now a modulator in the HEI system. Take it to a dealership, and have the PROS fix it

  4. it could be the alternator, honestly you need to have it hooked up to a diagnostics machine, that will find out if there is a current and why its not going where its supposed to
