Auto racing Update: Hamilton says Title Fight still not over for Top Five
The winner of last week’s race at Spa Francorchamps Lewis Hamilton has said that the title fight is still not over for the top five despite him taking the lead from Red Bull’s Mark Webber.
The top 5 drivers Lewis Hamilton, Mark Webber, Sebastian Vettel, Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso were separated by just 20 points before the Belgian Grand Prix. However, after this weekend, Lewis and Mark streaked 40 points ahead of the rest in the drivers’ standings as Jenson, Sebastian and Fernando weren’t able to score any points at Spa Francorchamps.
With his 25 points at Spa, the former world champion added that he would have to defend his title from all of his competitors, as the six upcoming races are very unpredictable. “You've seen in the last few races how quickly things can change. We still have a long way to go and there are still many points to be grabbed by any of the drivers who are fighting for the title”, Hamilton told a British newspaper.
He further added, “Clearly for me my closest rival in the championship is Mark in terms of points, but I still think the championship is open. Obviously, we want to make sure that's not the case after another few races”.
Hamilton began his F1 journey in 2007 after McLaren had released both of its drivers. The 2-time world champion was the team’s first priority but it also required a second driver. Lewis was lucky enough to avail the opportunity and race along the Spaniard. Hamilton had a dreamlike first season, as he was able to score nine podiums in his very first nine races. This was one of the most consistent debut runs ever in the Formula 1.
The 25 year old scored his first win at the Canadian Grand Prix and led the championship until the very last race despite conflicts with his teammate Fernando Alonso that caused many problems for the team. The Brazilian Grand Prix was the last and Lewis lost the title to Kimi Raikkonen as he retired and wasn’t able to score a single point. The second season however, was a dream come true for the British as Fernando left the team and Lewis led the championship once more until the very last race despite some crashes and a bad phase mid season.
It was a final race decider again and this time, Lewis was lucky enough to snatch the title away from Felipe Massa in the very last lap as he overtook Timo Glock and finished 1 point ahead of the Brazilian at his home Grand Prix. Lewis became the world champion and thus achieved every driver’s lifelong dream in just his second season.
After two ideal season’s, Hamilton faced a huge set back as the third season turned out to be a nightmare for him and he scored only 9 points in the first 10 races overall. However, Lewis was able to recover before the end of the season and scored 2 wins and 5 podiums in the second half securing a 5th place in the standings with 49 points. The McLaren driver along with his teammate are looking very good as Hamilton is leading the Championship after his win at Spa by 3 points followed by Webber in the Red Bull.
