Auto registration?

hello;

I bought my lease this last month. However, I was in the process of moving and I specifically asked the leasing company to send the car Title to a temporary New Jersey address where I would be staying at. However, the company send it to the old address in NJ. I waited for the Title to come so that I could register it in NJ. Now, the Title was forwarded to my new address in Missouri and the tax in Missouri is twice as much as that in NJ. I asked the leasing company to pay for the tax difference because I wouldn't have had this issue if they were to send the Title to a temporary address in NJ. They refused to pay the Missouri tax. What can I do?

  1. Pay the tax and move on.

  2. Whether in NJ or Mo, you have to pay sales tax on the purchase price of your vehicle.  Not the original price of the vehicle, but what you bought if from the leasing company for.   Sounds like Mo. is charging you for the original price of the vehicle. Or, Mo. charges "property taxes" on vehciles, and you need to pay the property taxes plus the sales tax on the purchase price  before you can register the vehicle, and that could be the difference.  Your property taxes plus the sales tax on your purchase price.  If that is not the case, you may be able to get a "title only" in New Jersey, if you know anyone there who will do that for you.  NJ will charge you the sales tax on the purchase price you paid the leasing company.  Once you have the Jersey title in your name, you can register it in Mo.  But don't forget there is a property tax in Mo.

    I owned my car in NJ, and had the title, but when I moved to Mo. before I could register it, I had to pay their property tax before I could register it there.  Once established in Mo., I would get a "tax bill" for my car in December, which was due to be paid in January.  I could not renew my registration until I proved I paid my property tax.
