Auto vs manual in a fast car?

Question

which is best? will you get made fun of if you drive a fast car with an automatic transmission? Is it worth the trouble of having a manual everyday? Please Do Tell!!!

Having a manual in a sports car is a must. Automatics really keep you from driving the car like it is meant to be driven. I had one in a standard, and loved it. It is not an aggravation to drive it at all.

For what it is worth, I'm a woman, and I giggle inside when I see a man with an automatic sports car. It is such a waste.

BTW, the same car in a standard will beat the automatic version anyday!

A modern automatic will shift faster and more reliably than a manual transmission. It will also give you better gas mileage because people with manuals tend to over rev the emgine before shifting.

I drove a Miata for years with an automatic and I never felt I was being a "sissy" or anything. And an automatic only needs work about every 200,000 miles. In the mean time, with a manual, you will go through several clutches, ending up costing about the same.

The people who say manuals are better just do not understand the engineering and are just mouthing things that were true in the 50s but the technology of automatics has improved a lot since then. While manuals have not changed since synchromesh was introduced.

And if you get stuck is mall traffic just once, with a manual, you will regret the decision.

I like to drive the manual.  But many pros (indy style cars) use automatics.

well, i dont see why anyone needs an automatic car, in europe 99% of cars, if not more, are manual and nobody complains about it, hardly anyone wants a manual there... it is a saying that yanks are lazy and so they have to drive automatics beside other things... sorry but always for manual...

I can only do a 12 second quarter mile in my car with an automatic and street tires - it would be quicker but the tires break loose during every shift or I would be in the 11's.  No one seems to laugh when I massacre their stick shift cars at the drags.  Last Friday at about 2am a friend of mine thought his Porche Turbo Carrera manual transmission was quick - I slaughtered his car with ease! ( I was impressed that he actually got rubber in the first 3 or 4 gears)

I do prefer manual transmissions.  Check out the funny cars that run the 1/4 mile in 5 seconds, NOT ONE OF THEM HAVE A MANUAL TRANSMISSION!

You're going to lose enormous power to the tranny in an auto. Not to mention gear shift speed and number of gears. I'd say go manual if you're looking to save gas, have power, and shift fast... but if you're not coordinated enough to drive a stick, you may as well just get an auto.

It is worth the fun of having a manual.  The manufacturer pays you $1500 extra to have the fun, but for that you have to keep having the fun the whole time you keep the car.
