Ok, so I'm new in the race world. I need tips on what a good track car would be? My budget is under 2 grand for the FINAL price. Something reliable, looks good, great performance, and RWD ( or AWD).

As for the mods and equipment im covered on that. i just need a good car to race with.

Thanks guys

  1. Fast, cheap, and reliable?  So that's ALL you want... oh, and good looks and not FWD?  If that car existed, I suspect it would be very popular!

Of course, it will all be relative... so what you can get will depend on just what your expectations are.  And how well the car will work will ultimately depend more on the rules for the series where you will autocross than the total performance potential of the car.

You don't mention currency, but if you are referring to $2k in US Dollars... keep in mind that many autocrossers spend this amount as their annual tire budget.  You will not find a competitive car that costs less than tires as a general rule.

If you are looking for something to learn in and not expecting to be competitive, then you will find many options... assuming you can let go of some of your expectations (either than, or you will just need to be extremely patient until someone with an F355 Challenge Car offers it for sale for $1999).

The car that will probably come closest to what you are looking for would be a Mazda Miata.  It's a good handling car that is well fitted for autocross, and it's RWD.  If you expand to consider FWD cars, the Honda CRX would be a strong contender as well.

If you already have a car, I'd recommend using it and focusing on improving the driver, and revisit the issue of buying a dedicated car after you have some experience (and additional budget, as it can get expensive).  On the other hand, if you are getting what will be your only car, and want one that will work for autocrossing, the real consideration will be getting something that will work in your daily life, is in good condition, and handles well; if you plan to have the car for many years, check that there is at least some after market support so you can add things like adjustable anti-roll bars and such when the time comes.
