  1. Yes, in general it is easier to drive an auto. I live in the UK and for some reason the British have been pretty resistant to autos except on luxury cars.

To be honest though, there is less involvement and fun in driving an auto. A nice summer afternoon taking a manual car through winding country roads reminds you what a pleasure motoring can still be.

Unfortunately your daily slog to work is not like that.  A manual is a real pain in city driving.  I visit my brother in Australia every couple of years and he always lends me one of his companies vehicles, always an auto, and every time I wonder just why back home i perservere with 5 on the floor.

  2. I tinhk manual cars because they are generally more reliable and more economical and can be easier for stuff like step hills.. and on a hill you have to change sometihng in an automatic anyway so just go for manual I would say

  3. A Manual Car is more economical as far as fuel is concerned.

If you take your driving test in an Automatic you can ONLY drive Automatic Cars.  But if you take your test in a Manual you can legally drive BOTH.

  4. automatic takes up more petrol they are less economical

Automatic gearboxes are heavier than manual ones, and less efficient in operation, so an automatic car will always be slower and less economical than a manual equivalent

  5. yes automatic is easier.

but people prefer manual (not spelt manuel just to tell you) because its more fun to drive, and uses less gas.

  6. Manuel cars ? Are they from Spain ? Anyway, automatics are definitely easier but I prefer manual. There's something  I like about shifting gear and putting my foot down.

  7. Myself have driven both and atm on my second Nissan Skyline auto.

After being so impressed with my first auto skyline ,i bought another when one came up for sale to me again.

I have drove auto's before an not really enjoyed the experience but for the person and people whom say auto skylines are not good ,myself love the experience sporty auto's are nothing like other auto's i have driven.

My car for example is very responsive to the pedal a light touch and iam shooting off at a good speed this is from a stand still and the same whilst driving slowly, for extra fun i have an overdrive button and a rev hold button also a power button which will allow me to redline through the gears. All this is good fun and i have driven many many manuals and to be honest none have felt as fun as this ,i have driven not so sporty auto's and haven't really enjoyed the experience but its seems through experience that all cars are different as all auto's drive different also.

I come to realise that driving a manual doesn't make me feel like an racing driver and yet with a sporty autobox it is not a matter of sitting back and just putting you foot down, with control of the gear changes it is still fun.

As for being easier to drive auto's seem harder to me with the unexpected gear changes on corners and driving slow in traffic and again a unexpected gear change and the car wanting to shoot off coupled with no gears to use for braking auto is def harder to drive.

Other forms of auto's are the triptronic and the new systems used in cars like the new Nissan 2008 GT-R

  8. An automatic is easier, however, a stick or manual drive car is lighter, cheaper, and you have more control over the way it drives.  Therefore, if you wanted better mileage, or if you had a sports car, etc. a manual is the better choice.

  9. Automatics are easier, but manuals are more fun!

You have more influence over your speed & acceleration, fuel consumption, and can use them to help you slow down as well.

I believe most cars in the US are automatic, but most cars in Europe are manuals. Automatics are not very popular here in Europe! Also, in many countries, (certainly UK) passing your driving license on an automatic car means you are not allowed to drive a manual car, but passing with a manual license does allow you to drive an automatic.

  10. I have recently changed to Auto.  On mine I can drive in Auto or manual but there is no clutch.  As for fuel I am on diesel and obtain 74 mpg on motorways and 53 mpg general running around.

I can also change gear on paddles on steering wheel.  The electronic gearboxes nowadays do not make you use more fuel like the old ones did.

For instance our second car which has always been auto used to get max 35 mpg on good trips  but the new one with electronic auto is giving about 43 mpg running around.  They are easier to drive but you have to remember that if you pass test in UK with Auto you cannot drive a manual car without supervision.

  11. because it is easier to gain momentam, also it is not as fetal as an automatic car coz in aotomatic,a driver only preses the cluch and may forgets that he is driving thus cousing an accident.

  12. automatics are by definition very easy to drive some people would say to the point of  boring but on a long journey much less demanding than manual gear box ,your left foot is basically redundant!.       ps only in uk!

  13. Why do I drie a manual?

    1) Better power. I can manage my engine RPMs better than any driver of an auto can. If I know I get peak horsepower and torque at a certain RPM level, I can make sure my engine speed stays there.

    2) Better gas mileage. An automatic links the tranny to the engine with a torque converter, one of the most inefficient inventions known to man. A clutch is 100% efficient when fully engaged.

    3) Easier to repair and rebuild - automatic transmissions are complex. A stick is a very simple mechanism in contrast.

    4) Stick shifts allow a car to be roll-started. That's just plain cool. If your battery goes dead on an automatic, you need a jump. I don't.

  14. Vehicles fitted with manual transmission systems do not have a foot controlled clutch, to replace this there is an automatic clutch system. (2 clutches on DSG gearbox)

    Manual : Clutch and gearstick

Auto : No clutch, different type of gearstick

When you drive a manual, for moving off, you have to release the clutch slowly for the car to move, and increase revs.

On an automatic system, you select 'Drive' mode and just accellerate. As you do this, the car will automaticly change gear for you depending on the speed that you are travelling at.

There are either one or two fixed gears on an automatic transmission system, to allow the vehicle to run smoothly at a slow speed, and it will not change up.

People tend to prefer manual mainly because the car that they learnt to drive in had or has a manual gearbox fitted, and they have stuck with it, and do not want to try out anything else. Another reason may be that most people have manual, and they are also used to the system.

Most of the modern cars have a choice of gearboxes.

The americans tend to mainly use automatics, and UK people tend to use manual.

I suppose when you drive an automatic vehicle, you feel like you have nothing to do. (eg. changing gear)
