  1. Electric cars use a CVT (continuous variable transmission).  Unlike tradition transmissions of gears, CVT is a transmission made up of chains that adjust to provide the correct amount of torque and power to the wheels.

Automatic transmissions also decreases your mileage, while a CVT is electronically controlled to optimize fuel efficiency.

  2. We can use  a motor per wheel structure and a winding system that does not need a gear shifting system. We can use a starting winding designed to get the vehicle moving. We will use that even if we use a gear system.

We can use reverse as a winding.

Now we can use a two-speed gear shifter. But we do not have a need for a torque converter. Electric motors  do a remarkably good job of torque conversion. A liquid torque converter is not needed.

We do not need a set of bands on gears, though that is unimportant.

  3. There's no point in having a multi-ratio transmission, automatic or not in an electric car because the electric motor doesn't have a limited power band like an internal combustion engine so all an electric car needs is a one speed reduction gearbox (reverse can be done by running the motor backwards).

  4. automatic transmissions require alot of hp which would detract from the benefit of an electric car. I have a Prius and it has a very smooth transition not the feel of my previous '06 Camry. Believe that auto trans works on hydraulics using the vacuum to aid with the shifting - to tell it when to shift...

  5. Most electric cars do not need a transmission. The electric motor has totally different dynamic characteristics.

And no, automatic transmissions are not shifted by vacuum.

  6. The only reason that I could think of is that the transmission is shifted by vacuum from the engine, and an electric motor does not create a vacuum, how ever you should be able the shift it manually, but you would have to tighten the salvo to not down shift.
