Question:

Automatic transmission fluid used in a manual transmission, good or bad?

Just got the transmission on my 2004 Corolla serviced.

I drive a stick-shift(manual trans) but the dealer put in automatic transmission fluid (ATF T-IV).

Is this going to damage my transmission?

  1. If the dealer put in ATF, then you can bet that ATF is recommended for your tranmission.  Some manuals are recommended to run ATF, while others run just gear oil, but you will never put straight grease in your transmission.  My truck runs 75W-90 gear oil, and I have a friend who's truck uses ATF.  It all depends on what the vehicle/tranmission manufacturers recommend.   It is far worse to put straight gear oil in an automatic than to put ATF in a manual.  Hope this helps.

  2. Yes it will damage the new transmission very bad you should take it back to the dealer and then replace it with the right fluid and I would not drive too many miles with the fluid in your transmission hope this helps you

  3. Some manual transmissions  take auto transmission fluid. Check your manual.

  4. man trans is grease, auto is fluid. very bad

  5. Horrible!
