Question:

Automotive tire wear?

I know that highway driving is easier miles on a car than say city driving. Is it also easier on the tires resulting in less tire wear? So if I drove 40,000 on the highway and 40,000 in the city which ones would wear faster or wouldn't there be much difference?

  1. Not necessary. In highway the car is driven at a higher speed and mileage covered in a day is more. Due to high speed the temperature on Tyre surface will also be more.Braking will be less but brake stops will be more severe.

In the city unless it is a taxi there will not be continuous use. If it is driven in a crowded city there will be more start and stop usages. While running speeds will be less compared to the highway's  number of brake applications. The consequent effect on Tyres cannot be ruled out. The redeeming factor could be the lesser brake force .

The Tyre life will be based on the type of terrain, number of stops, magnitude of brake force, and driving style. If it is a taxi in New York the wear will be higher as compared to a highway run car. But in the same city a private car Tyre may lost longer.

  2. In general, highway miles are easier on all aspects of a vehicle than city miles - as long as you are driving at a steady pace. Stop and go traffic on the highway is just as bad as city driving. The best thing to do to reduce wear and tear on tires is to keep them at a proper inflation - do not over-inflate or under-inflate.

  3. Highway miles would wear out a tire faster than city driving because the tires run faster and the heat they develop wear the tire out faster.

Running in the city they don't get as hot.

This is taking into mind that you don't "burn out" or drive stupidly.
