I think the place you are thinking of is The Murray River and the The Darling Basin/River. There is an incredible amount of irrigation in this area as a huge percentage of farming takes place and supplies most of the fruit and vegetables not only for national use but also for export. Upriver of the Darling Basin is the Snowy Mountain Hydro electric scheme. This total area covers three states. However, recently there have been major issues with salination and also drought and I believe that now there are charges for water usage and restrictions on amounts.

  I have not checked figures so this could be out of date now, and it could be more urban areas like Sydney....?
