  1. All of Tay Tay answers seem correct, one other item that is of interest is the breath tube that will let you breath air that is near your body but not contaminated with CO2.  As I said earlier, take an avalanche survival course, it's well worth the time and money if you are in a hazard area.

Check this website for more info http//.www.indoorclimbing.com/ avalanche_beacon.htm   This should give you the answers you need.

  2. Avalanche Probe - Long, thin, collapsable pole used to probe the snow for a buried skier

Avalanche Shovel - Durable, short, lightweight shovel used to dig out a buried skier

Avalanche Airbag - Backpack with a parachute-type rip cord to pull if caught in an avalanche, designed to keep you on top of the snow. check http://www.abssystem.com/ for a good defenition, pictures, and videos.

Avalanche Beacon - Pretty close to a GPS.  Worn on the body, in case you are buried in an avalanche, it transmits a signal that other people with beacons can use to locate you.  They're pretty accurate, usually within feet.

@Jim's response - Thank you!  I was trying to think of what I was missing but i couldnt remember it, and thats it!  Its called the Avalung made by Black Diamond.  Itts basically a back pack that pulls air out of the snow behind you and has a little mouth bite to breathe through kind of like a scuba breather. Check the site in my sources to see one.
