Avantha Masters: Scottish Whiteford shows stellar performance, gains 2-stroke lead in the 2nd round
Scottish Peter Whiteford stunned the spectators in the second round of Avantha Masters on Friday by seizing a two-shot lead against his nearest rival.
Whiteford appeared to be in stellar form, as he not only battled his tough rivals, but also the cold winds sweeping the course of New Delhi.
Whiteford kicked off the $2.4 million tournament in an amazing style, taking full advantage of the favourable conditions on the course.
The Scottish star managed to pile up a big score on the first day, sharing the lead with Alejandro Canizares of Spain.
The round one saw Whiteford launch 6 birdies. He seemed to be at ease with his putts, as he surged ahead with calculated moves.
He cheered up the spectators when he shot a superb birdie putt on the 2nd hole of the round 1. On the back nine, he reeled off 4 straight birdies, carding an overall 6-under 66 to share the lead with Spaniard.
Although he faltered a little in the round 2, he still managed to produce a phenomenal game. He carded an overall 4-under 68.
The 2nd round saw him par the first 3 holes. On the par-4 4th, he drained his first birdie of the day. He seemed to lose his control on the 4th, scoring a bogey.
He grabbed attention yet again, as he carded a much-needed eagle on the par-5 6th hole. On the back nine, he shot 3 birdies, but the round was not flawless.
He seemed to mess up the round when he erroneously made 2 consecutive bogey on the 12th and 13th. However, he managed to gain a 2-stroke lead to cap off the round on a promising note.
Sharing his feelings at the end of the round, Whiteford said that he was confident enough to record near-flawless rounds, and this is what helped him pile up a lead against his rivals.
"I had a sticky patch at the start. It was freezing cold this morning and a lot harder. But once it warmed up a bit, I started to play better and gave myself a few chances. I had a good eagle on the sixth which kick-started me to finish well,” Whiteford
said while taking to the media.
The 31-year-old Scottish is seeking his first triumph on the European Tour. Avantha Masters is staged under the banner of European Tour, Professional Golf Tour of India and Asian Tour.
