Question:

Average Lifespan of A Quarter Horse?

I have a 27 year old Quarter Horse and he still rides great. He used to be a Roping and Barrel Racing horse, but now he is mostly just a pleasure horse. He doesn't get ridden much, though. How much longer is he expected to live? What is the average lifespan of a quarter horse? I would like actual numbers from a reliable source, not a personal experience, please! Thank you.

  1. depends on each horse and how well they're taken care of.

my friend's/trainer's arab stallion s 35, he is retired and not ridden any more, but he's still alive and kickin in his old age.

30 is said avrage(in most books and web sites i've read), but they can live longer. . . just keep taking care of the horse as good as you have (you have to be doing something right).

sry but personal experiance plays a part in any reliable source. My trainers say ave over all is 30, my one trainer's horse is 35. nobody can say how long each horse is going to live.

  2. Usually ballpark 30 years is the average lifespan of a horse. QHs, ponies, appys, tend to live a little longer than most. Our horses don't like to die off until at least 35, and if yours is 27 and still in good shape, you might even get 10 more years out of him. It's different for every horse in every situation. All depends on how he's been cared for throughout his life.

  3. Most of the time horses die around 30. The oldest horse that ever lived was 63 though. One my my horses is currently around 30-35 and is in better shape than our other horses which are both 16. So, it most of the time varies.

  4. personal experience is a lot better than any book, just so you know

if the horse was a roping and barrel horse then he probably had excellent care and should see no problem seeing fourty

  5. they can live thu their upper20's lower 30's

  6. Usually 25-30 years, but some horses are older than that

  7. Ive always been told the average age for horses is 30. but Ive seen several live to the mid thirties.  Sounds like you've taken very good care of your guy and that he probably still has several years of a happy life left to go. Some horses are just not meant to retire and riding them keeps 'em happier and heathier.

Hope you have many more years to spend with your special guy!!! :)

  8. 30 maybe if its really  healthy 32 -34 but 30 is prety average

  9. I would say depending on the horse 25-30 years of age.

  10. You'll often see QH's in their upper 20's and lower 30's.  I had one that lived to be 42.

The biggest thing that prevents horses from surviving is their teeth.  Regular dental care is a must.

Also - when their teeth are really bad - they need a mixture of complete feed and senior feed that is soaked in water to make a mash.

Occasional riding is great for them.  They shouldn't be ridden hard - but I think they enjoy the occasional light trail ride.  That is assuming their health is up for it (including their feet).

The AAEP (American Assocation of Equine Practitioners) and AQHA (American Quarter Horse Association) both state that the average lifespan of a QH is 30 years.

    Best wishes!
