Average Speed Cameras ??

Question

In principle.... I f a stretch of road 10 miles long has averaging speed cameras along it, with a speed limit of 50 mph, it should take you 12 minutes to travel the 10 miles. If you are stationary for 6 minutes, can you do the rest of this road, at 100mph, and avoid getting caught ?

The only average speed cameras i have come across are on motorway repair sites personally so technically you can not stop anyway.Worth thinking about though.Thought i saw a report on top gear once where they reckon you have to do at least 170mph to beat a speed camera(gatso) think they proved it with the stig.

Theoretically yes, which is why it is always a good idea to pack a picnic for those stationery moments

Yes but be wary those cameras can also be adjusted to do a spot speed as well

it does works on average speed over the distance, but theres normally 3 cameras or more, called  SPEC's, there becoming popular, i have seen some around leicester area i think, the system can check upto 60 plates a second, thus if you change lane then youll still get nabbed. whilst its field of view is limited to about 3/4 of the lane, if you were to be on the dotted line, you might just be out of its field of view and focus. Its based on a system similar to TALON, used a ferry ports now, where it records all vehicle plates entereing and leaving, again upto 60 at a time a second. As long as you dont go to quickly through each zone then you will be ok, but if you slow in zone 1-2 then fast in 2-3 you get a ticket for speeding there. as used on the M6 just north of Brum, where spec's caught over 10 thousand over the year it was there!!, few quid for the coffers and their chocolate biscuits...

These are becoming more common - the first one was on the Glasgow - Stranraer road, I remember it being a story on the news.

No, the cameras can detect 100MPH, your theorey sounds correct, but it is wrong, they are calibrated to catch cars up to 130MPH i believe
