  1. You need to be more concerned about the distance than the time. Cab fares are generally a combination of mileage and time, with mileage being the dominant factor by far. The time will accumulate, but it's a very small portion of the total fare.

    Obviously, if you have the cab sitting idle for 30 minutes, the meter will continue to add it up. But it won't be anywhere near as much as when the cab is moving.

    Here's what I suggest. Determine the distance you need to travel and how long you need the cab to wait for you. Then call a local cab company and find out their rate per mile and waiting time charge. That should give you a pretty good idea of the total cost.
