  1. "Organic" farming represents a step backwards.  Using incompletely processed animal waste in a haphazard manner simply cannot compete with chemical fertilizers designed for the purpose.  Corn yields went from 40-60 bu/acre in the Midwest to 100-200 bu/acre when commercial fertilizers were introduced.  There is an unfortunate tendency to over-fertilize to get even better yields.  Organic fertilizers were much more forgiving in this area.  Except in special cases you simply could not over-fertilize.  With chemical fertilizers you can over-fertilize, and the result is usually detected as increased nitrates in groundwater.
