Right now I am living in Murfreesboro, TN and have a 2400 sq. ft. house and have a $200/month electric bill during these summer months. I have a job possibility and finding that the cost of living is extremely high comparatively. What would be the average of a 2500 to 3000 square foot house?

  1. It can vary a lot depending on the energy efficiency of the house and appliances, including A/C unit. You are probably looking at $200-400 in electricity a month.

It's really impossible to say though, because a 2500sf two-story house with a black roof, no shade trees, leaky duct work, west facing windows, unserviced a/c unit, and inadequate attic insulation is going to use a LOT more energy than a house built with energy efficiency in mind.

Another thing to keep in mind is although it is hot here in the summer and you'll have to use a lot of A/C, fall and spring are usually pretty nice and you won't have to use the heater or a/c too much.  After you've been an Austin Energy customer for a year, they can average out your electricity usage and send you a bill for a fixed amount each month.

  2. Well I don't know about a house, but my 700 sq ft apartment uses about $80-100 of electricity.

  3. Average electric bill in Murfreesboro may be different from Austin. My Monthly electric bill also includes water and sewage. I would say it's runs around $275. all three included. Also remember that in Texas we pay no State income tax, which is why it seems that our property taxes are high. Good Luck and Welcome to Austin. You're goin a love it! I just move 2 year and you could pry me out of this place.
