what is the average yearly income of a technical writer?

According to Monster, the median salary in 2007 was $60,390. Although I have to mention that after graduating from a Community College, I briefly attempted to go down this career path until I realized that starting salaries were more like $25,000 and that was if you were lucky enough to find something that wasn't contract, tempoary, or part-time work.
