Question:

Average platoon size for Army Basic Training?

My husband just shipped for basic last week. He went through reception and is now in basic training. He said his platoon size is only 6. I thought platoons were 50+ people. Why would they only take a group of 6 people to train? Would that mean they will have a harder time getting such individual attention? Will they graduate earlier since there are so little people? I'm new to the army lifestyle and was just wondering.

  1. A platoon size is 16 to 44 soldiers it is led by a lieutenant.

Consist of 2 to 4 squads a squad is 9-10 soldiers. ms

  2. I thought a platoon is 30+

  3. As an ex Drill Sergeant with a basic training company at Fort Knox, KY, the average platoon consists of 40 to 50 young men and now women. I was a instructor in the 70's (E-12-5), and one answer is correct. He will be psychologically and physically torn apart by the best. He will then be rebuilt and you will not know him when he returns home. As for the MOS, that is determined after testing in effort to find where you are the most beneficial. One cannot depend on what the recruiters tell you prior to entry.

  4. ok well i just did my bct sep 27th to dec 7th and i highly doubt his platoon is only 6 ppl maybe his squad is 6 ppl but not his platoon my company which was made up of 4 platoons had at least 40 ppl in each platoon and each platoon have 4 squads made up of at least 10 each ....

    hope this helps

  5. In the Australian army A platoon is three sections  of usually 9  or 10 soldiers in a section.

Three platoons equals a company (approx 100 men).

In a section 2 act as scouts, 3 in the gun group , the section commander and the rest are riflemen plus one acting as signaler.

Each section is led by a section commander who is usually a corporal, a platoon is led by a sergeant and the company is led by a lieutenant.

In many cases the titles are still applied even though the numbers do not meet the requirement to constitute the name.

This is for admin and supply purposes as regiments will be supplied faster than a company , a company will be supplied faster than a platoon etc.

It is also indicative of another job market that is struggling to find sufficient personnel to take on employment.

Relax......Your husband will not get treated any different to any other recruit or have to work harder...you can rest assured that he will be just as bastardized and abused  as any other recruit for the duration of the training. he will endure the sleepless nights , forced marches, guard post duty and ridiculous character building exercises that all other soldiers have endured through recruit camps.

he wil graduate along with all his other 5 mates as long as he passes each test and meets the requirements.

Do not worry yourself ...he is in very good hands and will be set to be be abused , insulted, demeaned , belittled and ridiculed at every opportunity by some of the finest individuals to ever walk the earth! until; he proves his worth and performs as the soldier they want him to be

You will not know him when he comes home....that I can guarentee.

  6. An infantry squad is usually 11 men with four squads per platoon, however, much depends on the type of unit it is, what MOS etc. Airborne, Rangers and Special Forces tweak that a bit, and HQ units are almost always somewhat smaller.

Basic Training is a whole different animal. Squad size is probably determined by the equitable division of the number of recruits that a company has.

No, even if they complete their training earlier than the alloted time, they will just have down time till graduation. The criteria is sealed in stone.
