Question:

Average temperature pulse and respiration of a horse during work?

I know that the average TPR of a horse depends on his level of fitness... but I was wondering what the average TPR would be during medium work for a horse in good condition... say around the age of 10-15.

  1. well i don't really know. i think it all depends on the breed and everything. but the horse really shouldn't be too jumpy or any thing like that. and the horses respiration shouldn't be very high ether.  well good luck. Hope i helped Sabrina

  2. Temperature: 99 - 101

The temperature might be slightly elivated if working in heat or under stress.

When exercising, a horse's maximum heart rate can exceed 180 beats per minute

I am not sure of a smaller number range though for that senerio sorry.

  3. TPR is a individual thing for each horse,  a conditioned horse at medium work should have a Pulse in the 160 range.. And at Max  it can go as high as 280..though short of a doplar no one is every going to count that..

the best thing to do is to check your horse when you ride him for a few days and see what is normal for him.    One of my old geldings would pop a  P&R on the trail of 190/60.. but within 5 mintues was back to 80/30  and 10 minutes put him at 30/ 10.. they always swore he didnt breath.   As long as he recovers nicely the numbers arnt so much a issue

  4. Well, resting should be approx  T ~ 100.4   P ~ 36  R ~ 12

    During work, look for slight increasing. Just my guess, but I would say T ~ 101 (tops) P ~ 60  R ~ 40

  5. T-Normally, a horse's temperature will be between 99.8 F and 101.3 F. Keep in mind that the weather can affect temperature. In warm weather or during exercise, stress, or excitement, a horse's temperature will naturally rise.

P-When exercising, a horse's maximum heart rate can exceed 180 beats per minute.

R-About 30-55 breaths per minute...the respiration rate should NEVER exceed the pulse rate. A horse should also spend equal time inhaling and exhaling.

What's normal for one horse...is not for another.  Within about 6 minutes from ceasing work...TPR's should be almost back to 'normal' numbers for that particular horse.
