Avery Acker joins women’s volleyball team of Southern Methodist University
After serving at setter’s position in the Poth High School girls’ volleyball team, Avery Acker has opted for the Mustangs of Southern Methodist University (SMU).
She has been confirmed to play with the SMU squad as a freshman in the coming fall.
The Head Coach of Mustangs, Lisa Seifert commented about the new addition in her team.
She said, “Avery is an incredibly athletic setter. She started setting later in her career, so it's great that she is here now to get the necessary training before the fall season. She is a true athlete who has competed in various sports and always finds a way to win.”
The mentor of SMU gave a really good overview of the player as Acker is a multi-talented athlete, who has expertises as setter, middle blocker, and a powerful hitter. She proved her endeavours while playing for Pirates of Poth High School as senior setter and right-side hitter. She settled for District Setter of the Year, earned the All-State Honorable Mention and Academic All-District, and was also named in the All-State Tournament team.
Acker remained attached with the Pirates in 2011 season and contributed to the overall success of her team. She helped the team to achieve an overall record of 45-10 in the previous season.
With Pirates, she put up a great show of volleyball and earned many honours. As an attacker, she ranked third on the team with a total of 202 kills in her junior season. On the other hand, she added team-high 611 assists while playing as setter. She was more effective in setter’s position.
Before joining Poth High School Pirates, she was part of the Freer High School team and ran the show as captain of the team.
The Mustangs finished the 2011 season with an overall record of 15-17. MSU dropped matches and won less.
However, the team is determined to shake off the bad impression in the 2012 season by giving out a better performance. That is why the team management has decided to open its doors for experienced players like Acker, who can help the team earn more wins in the running season.
