The Brooklyn Nets head coach understands the frustration of his point guard, Vows to help him out...
Back when he was at Utah Jazz under the legendary Jerry Sloan, Deron Williams used to thrive under the quick passing system which allowed him to set up a lot pick and rolls and quick transition plays.
That changed once he became a part of the New Jersey Nets, now the Brooklyn Nets. D-Will has now got to run more isolation plays, which means he has to shoot more. And with his injured wrist, that has become a dilemma for him.
D-Will has been struggling from the floor since the time he became a Net and the situation has got worse this time around, with the three times All-Star managing stats of 38.8 percent from the field and 29.9 percent from 3-point
range before  he took on his former team tonight.
After practice yesterday, Williams vented out some of his frustration and blamed Avery Johnson’s system as being a major part of his problems. The coach has however taken the comments in his stride and vowed to make life more comfortable
for his star point guard, who signed a 5 year-$98 million contract with the Nets this summer.
"I just think we're putting more and more stuff in that he's familiar with and getting back to some of those things -- a lot of stuff that he did in his Utah system," Johnson said before the Nets-Jazz game at Barclays Center. "And
I just think at the end of the day, when the shots are going down, everybody feels better about the team and their individual game.”
The shots however have not been coming for Williams, who according to stats from basketball-reference.com is making just 33.3 percent of his jumpers.
Johnson added that he wants to give his point guard more freedom, and will make every effort to create a comfort zone for him.
"About 30 percent of what we do is what was run with him in Utah. I just think we need to do it more on the floor. And really, he has the power and the freedom to call the plays that he's most comfortable with, so I think that's
what he's going to get back to doing."
