Question:

Avian illness: crust around the ear of my lovebird?

My lovebird, who is a couple of years old now, has recently developed a sort of crust around his right ear. His left ear is completely normal and is well covered by the feathers on his head, while the right ear hole is open and exposed, surrounded by the crust. I've been looking around some avian disease websites but can't find anything like it, and I'd like to get some idea of what I'm dealing with before I go in to see an avian vet (so that I'm not entirely lost before I make the appointment).

Does anyone have any idea of what he might have? Are there any measures I can take in the home to improve his condition while I figure out what vet to take him to? Thanks in advance.

  1. Has it got a mate? this could be over preening?

Try spraying your bird with a solution of T.C.P. in warm water,2 teaspoons to a pint of water, this should be done for 6-12 days

if there is no improvement then visit your vet.

Do you give it Greens ?try some Broccoli ,Kale Spinach,Celery Carrot including tops,,or if you can get Dandelion leaves and seeding heads before they sprout these are ideal, but do-not give it Lettuce.
